Costs

Notary fees are regulated uniformly throughout Germany by the Court and Notary Fees Act and are therefore the same for all notaries. The cost system is carefully balanced. As a result, notaries carry out many official activities without charging a fee that covers their costs. This is compensated for by the fact that they collect higher fees for large transactions. By linking notarial fees to the value of the transaction and thus to the ability of the parties involved, it is ensured that everyone can make use of notarial services regardless of their financial circumstances and the complexity of the matter. The notarial cost system is thus designed to be socially acceptable.

And it has another advantage: notarial advice, including the drafting work, is already included in the notarization fee. There are therefore no separate costs for this.

A comprehensive study by Harvard University on the cost structure of real estate transactions has shown that notaries in Germany not only guarantee a high degree of legal certainty, but that notary costs are also low by international standards.

You can find examples of how to calculate notary fees on the information portal of the Federal Chamber of Notaries.
